We have just returned from an excellent trip to Denmark and Sweden. We packed up the car and made the 8 hour journey to Harwich to catch the ferry to Esbjerg in Denmark.
First stop for the little people had to be Legoland and Lalandia waterpark next door, after which we stopped in bustling Copenhagen for a few days and watched the cool set cycle past on their bikes (almost getting run over a few times in the process). That world famous Danish design didn't pass us by and we visited the stunning contemporary design shops Hay and Normann as well as a Saturday flea market and vintage design shops. Danish Classic on Bredgade was a personal favourite. A nice little cafe to visit right in the centre is the Royal Smushi Cafe, even if only to see the interior. After the noise and style fix of the city, we crossed the 16 km (approx) Øresund bridge (consisting of a tunnel, an artificial island and bridge - our son loved this) to Malmö in Sweden for the second week.
We stayed on a beautiful farm in the Skåne region of the country (think beautiful rolling countryside with an absolutely exquisite evening light) and visited the beautiful beach at Falsterbo and surrounding areas. We were extremely lucky with the weather; most days were filled with glorious sunshine.
The pictures below were taken firstly at Louisiana gallery of Modern Art, just north of Copenhagen. A breathtaking location by the sea with a beautiful sculpture garden, mid century gallery space and an impressive design shop to 'lose yourself' in for a while. We also had a lovely lunch of Smørrebrød (the famous Danish open Sandwich) and beer there. The other photos show the busy beach at Skanör in Sweden. This was my favourite beach location as it had a great laid-back nautical vibe with a marina and a couple of quality fish restaurants. We tasted some incredible smoked herring at Skanörs Fiskrögeri. Lastly, beautiful gardens in Malmö and a shot of the relaxing and beautiful Swedish house we stayed in.
It was a wonderful break with lots for the kids, some city style and culture ( for the design-minded!) and a little relaxed beach life to finish with. Happy Holidays, whatever you are up to!
